Student Success Statement

“Success is dependent on effort.”

-Sophocles, Greek dramatist

Reflection: I agree a lot with Sophocles statement.  Success is definitely dependent on effort and nothing else. If you show a lot of effort and you try your hardest, you will succee4d in life and accomplish your goals. On the other hand if you don’t try at all and show no effort you will not succeed and become a failure. Effort is what makes someone succeed. For example, if you try your hardest and show lots of effort in every class your taking, you will succeed and will earn great grades. All your effort pays off with success and if you don’t show effort you basically won’t succeed. Show lots of effort and succeed in life!

How to Take on College Studying

Part 2

Choose Where to Study

Where you should study depends on two factors: the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.

·        The best places to study have good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space—usually your dorm room, your apartment or the library.

·        For completing problem sets a brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion.

·        When you are reading book chapters or working on a research paper, you are probably better off in a less social environment.

Improve your study habits

Here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying:

·        Have a routine for where and when you study.

·        Choose reasonable and specific goals that you can accomplish for each study session.

·        Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of the day.

·        Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.

·        Get to know students whom you respect and can study with to contact to ask questions.

·        Keep up with the workload and seek help when you need it.

Summary/ Reflection

Summary: Jenna Huff and deb were racing in a running race that would determine their place in the states competition. Deb ran throughout the race really well but when she was about to get to the finish line her hip got injured and she stopped with a lot of pain. Jenna, who was competing against her was barely catching up and stopped to help her. Jenna grabbed deb from the arm and jogged to the finish line with her. Right when they were going to cross the finish line Jenna push Deb a step forward making her the winner of the race.
Reflection: This story was really heart touching. Jenna Huff acted in a really nice way and showed a great example of sportsmanship. She didn’t care about winning; instead she cared for Deb and made her win a race she deserved. She helped someone in need and chose the right. She didn’t care about getting disqualified all she cared about was doing what was right and helping a person in need out. Choose the right like Jenna and show great sportsmanship.

How to Take on College Studying

Part 1

Develop Good Study Habits
In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demand of a college class is probably more rigorous than those you are used to. You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it. Think of college as a full-time job, in which you spend 10 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.
Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.
Decide When to Study
Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.

·       Figure out what blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings and on weekends.
·       Consider what time of day you are most alert—there are morning people and night owls—and try to schedule your studying accordingly.
·       Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting down for marathon sessions.

“Choosing the right is always the right thing to do.”

-Alex Linares
Reflection:  This quote is really true. Choosing the right is always the right thing to do no matter what. If you do what’s right then you are choosing the correct decisions. Choosing the right makes you feel better as a person. For example, if there is trash on the floor and you pick it up you don’t only make yourself feel better but also help out the environment. You help make clean your surroundings and the areas you live in. Choosing the right benefits you and the whole community. Choose the right because it’s always the right

10 Time Management Tips for Students

Tips 5-10

Tip 5.  Review Your Notes Every Day.
Reviewing helps reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in class or have to take a pop quiz.
Tip 6. Get a Good Night Sleep.
Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
Tip 7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others.
If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends tht you are only available at certain times of day and not to expect a response at other times.
Tip 8. Become a Taskmaster.
Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip 9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing
Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip 10. Determine Your Priorities.
You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

“It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.”

ANON

Reflection: This statement is really true. It’s better to be alone than in bad company. It’s better to be alone and choosing the right than with others who choose the wrong. Those who choose the wrong will influence you in a bad way. For example if you associate with people who do drugs, they will influence you into doing drugs and can even transform you into a drug addict. You will become filthy and demoralized like them, causing discomfort and hurting your own body. It doesn’t matter if you’re alone, as long as you do what’s right you will become a better person and feel good about yourself. Choose the right and avoid bad company!

“Improvement begins with I.”

Anon

Reflection: This statement is really true. Improvement begins with you and no one else. You have to improve in order to get better at things. It begins with you and no one else because you are going to change and improve. No one else will improve you, you have to improve yourself and achieve your obstacles. You will only accomplish your goals if you improve, and that starts with you. For example if you’re not good at Math, you have to study extra hard and listen even more to improve and get better. It all starts with you. Choose the right and take a step forward to improving!

Reflection

This example of good sportsmanship was really heart touching. It was a beautiful story of helping others out and Mallory and Liz chose the right. Mallory and Liz helped out Sarah after injuring herself when she had barely made a home run. Liz and Mallory helped her get up from first base and helped her touch each base because she deserved it. It was a really great example that shows good sportsmanship. It was also emotional because it shows that there is actually people out in the world who choose the right and are really caring. This was an amazing story that showed a perfect example of good sportsmanship!

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Helen Keller

Reflection: This statement by Helen Keller has a lot of meaning to it. Alone a person can only do so little but if you work together you can accomplish a lot of things. For example, if only one person protest against animal abuse, he/she will accomplish very little or not much at all, but if a whole organization of people work together to stop this cruelty, many things can be accomplished. Like today The ASPCA and PETA are both two huge organizations who work against animal cruelty and have made a lot of differences in the world. You and group of people can also make a change. Choose the right and work together!!!
7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 6
Habit 6: Synergize
Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: Learn to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of synergy: it’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the sax, or the vocalist, it’s all of them together that make up the “sound”. Each member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. No instrument is more important than another, just different.

“So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in-group,” we lose sight of the things that are far more important.”

Sean Covey

Reflection: This statement is really true. Many people to become popular choose the wrong. By doing that you forget about the important things In life. For example many teens today drink and do drugs just to look” cool and popular.” These teens forget about the important things like education, family, health, etc. many people mess up their lives in order to become popular and choose nothing but the wrong. Stick to who you are and choose the right! Don’t just choose the wrong to become “popular”, it actually makes you less of a person.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 5

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

Habit 5

5. Seek first to Understand, and then to be Understood
Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood. Thus habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication skill there is: active listening.
Why is this habit the key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are—a unique, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-cloned individual. People won’t expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone and feelings reflected in our voice (40 percent). Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk than listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means should listen twice as much as we talk. Learn to listen and listen to learn. Listen, really listen, for understanding. Seek first to understand than to be understood—LISTEN.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Habit 4

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

Habit 4

4. Think Win-Win
Teens can learn to foster the belief that it is possible to create an atmosphere or Win-Win in every relationship. This habit encourages the idea that in any given discussion or situation both parties can arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. Your teen will learn to celebrate the accomplishments of others instead of being threatened by them. Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win. It’s both nice and tough all at once. I won’t step on you, but I won’t be your doormat either. You care about other people and you want them to succeed as well. Win-Win is abundant. It is the belief that there’s plenty of success to go around. It’s not either you or me. It’s both of us. It’s not a matter of who gets the biggest piece of the pie. There’s more than enough food for everyone. It’s an all-you-can-eat-buffet.
Win-win always creates more perhaps surprising benefit of thinking Win-win is the good feelings brings on. The true test of whether or not you are thinking Win-Win or one of the alternatives is how you feel. Win-lose and Lose-win thinking you will cloud your judgment and fill you with negative feelings. Win-Win will fill your heart with happy and serene thoughts. It will give you confidence. Even fill you with light. Think Win-Win or no deal.

“You cannot do wrong and feel right. It is impossible”

Ezra T. Benson

Reflection: This quote has a lot meaning to it. If you do what wrong you will never feel right. If you do wrong it will always remain in your conscious and you won’t feel right. You will feel guilty or uncomfortable rather than right. For example if you steal something you won’t feel right, you will feel panicked, scared, and guilty. On the other hand if you help someone in need, you will feel awesome and right. Choose the right and avoid feeling wrong!!!

7 habits of highly successful teens

Habit 3

Habit 3: Put first things first

Habit three is about will and will not power. This habit helps teens prioritize and manage their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means learning to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. Its living life according to what matters most. Putting first things first deals with things that are:

Important or not important, urgent or not urgent. Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management.

Quadrant 1: things that are important and Urgent

Quadrant 2: Things that are important but not urgent

Quadrant 3: Things that are not important but Urgent

Quadrant 4: Things that is not important and not urgent

1.   Important & Urgent
2.   Important but not Urgent

3.   Not Important but are Urgent
4.   Not important and not Urgent

Quadrant 2 is the ideal place to spend time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s where priorities come into play. The results for living quadrant 2 are:

1.   Control your life

2.   Balance

3.   High Performance

So, in what Quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to shift as much time as possible in quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by planning. Spend more time planning and incorporating the most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach for it.

“The only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door for failure. Thus the first law will obey, which precedeth all others is—‘I will for good habits and become their slaves.’”
Og Mandino
Reflection:  Og Mandino has a really good point. You habits determine whether you succeed or fail. You habits differs you form other and separates the people who succeed and those who fail. For example if you have a really bad habit of cheating, everyone will see you as a cheater and won’t trust you. On the other hand if you have a habit of studying all the time, people will see you as an intellectual person who is very studious. People who have good habits will succeed in life and those who have bad habits will fail. Choose the right and stick to your good habits!
